virgin music buying downtown for $775m
virgin music group, the indie-distribution arm of universal music, has officially wrapped up its $775 million acquisition of downtown music holdings. the deal was first announced in december 2024 and didn’t exactly pass quietly. european regulators took their time reviewing it, and a good chunk of the independent music world pushed back hard, worried about further consolidation and majors tightening their grip on independent infrastructure. downtown’s ecosystem, including fuga, cd baby, songtrust, and downtown music publishing, will now sit under virgin’s umbrella. depending on how you look at it, this is either a stronger global services machine for artists or another step in the slow absorption of the indie world by the majors. probably a bit of both.
